lyrics

Once there were two, and for a few months together they dreamed of a future
He considered the odds, he discovered the fear, and wept as he walked away

After five years they met, and for a while they faced their fears
But one day the will was not enough, and she turned and walked away
She could not accept the pain, and he watched her through the rain
There was no longer the fear, just the emptiness of nothing left to lose

He'd always believed in a life without end
In the comfort of stark, dreamless oblivion
But lost in this place, where the skin doesn't burn
This can't be hell, but it's colder than heaven

After ten years they met, and for a while they spoke and wept
But fear lay between them, and they said goodbye and walked away
They could not accept the pain, she stood and watched through the rain
They both took their different directions, so they could escape the ever-present fear

She'd always believed in a life without end
In the comfort of stark, dreamless oblivion
But lost in this place, where her skin doesn't burn
This can't be hell, but it's colder than heaven

And he said to her...
In your light I was made more
In your regard I was greater than I ever was before
But the more I fear, the less I feel, it leaves me cold
We could have been entwined
I would have walked my whole life by your side
But the fear tore us apart, heart and mind, and leaves us here
Together, alone

After forty years they met, he lay there while she wept
Said 'although we couldn't face our fears, I've always regretted walking away'
She could hardly bear the pain, as she watched him through the rain
That night she lay alone, something new stirred in her heart
I should have welcomed the fear, because it tells me there is something worth keeping
I should have welcomed the pain, because it tells me I'm alive

I've always believed, in a life without end
In the comfort of stark, dreamless oblivion
I'll only be lost, for the heart doesn't burn
I'd rather see hell, than be colder than heaven

I wish we'd lived a life, instead I'm dead inside
I know there's no hell, instead I'm colder than heaven
